AS IF IT WASNâT ENOUGH to have survived the feast, my dreams came true again the next morning. No sooner had Matthew arrived with my breakfast tray than the princeâs order came again. I was to have the day for myselfâfree from the confines of my lofty chambers.
âYou must have done well at the feast,â Matthew murmured, watching as I scarfed down my food. The book lay forgotten on the table behind us, as there was no longer a need for it. âOtherwise I imagine heâd lock you in here for good.â
I wiped my mouth hastily, eager to get back into the sun.
âBut the thing is, I didnât do well at the feast,â I confessed, lowering my voice in case we were overheard. âI didnât say the things that were expected of me. At one point, Iâm fairly sure I insulted the queenââ
âBut you impressed the prince,â Matthew interrupted, stressing the word in a way I didnât yet understand. âThey are not always of the same mind. Thatâs important to remember.â
I slowly lowered my napkin to the tray, wanting to ask what he meant. But at that moment there was a knock on the door, and one of my scorned guards stuck his head inside the room.
âWill you be needing our services today, milady? Or are we to be excused?â
Our eyes met for a brief moment. I could have sworn I saw him smile.
âNo escort today,â I said lightly, still unable to believe that such a thing would be within my control. Then those awkward manners took hold of me. âBut thank you for offering.â
The guardâs smile deepened as Matthew closed his eyes with a grimace.
âVery well, milady.â
Then he was gone.
The second the door closed, Matthew turned to me with a hint of exasperation. Looking as though he was trying very hard not to smile himself.
âYou donât have to do that, you know. Itâs not in the nature of royalty to be courteous.â
I shrugged carelessly, grabbing my sandals off the floor. âPerhaps itâs not in my nature to become royalty,â I replied, thinking this quite clever.
Matthew tilted his head sarcastically, not as impressed as I might have hoped.
âPerhaps not. But for nowâyou must play the part.â
With that, he grabbed my purse from the closet and tossed it into my hands. I caught it with a grin, still wondering what was inside, then turned to him with sudden inspiration.
âCome with me!â
He glanced up in surprise, hands hovering over the untidy tray. âWhat?â
âCome with me,â I said again, gesturing to the window. âTo the gardens, or the stables, or wherever you like. Youâve been assigned to attend me, so why couldnât you come along?â
His lips parted, as if the entire exchange had caught him off guard. Then he returned quickly to his task, looking a little surlier than before.
âBecause thatâs not the way things are done,â he said shortly.
I rushed forward to help, trying to make him look at me.
âBut what if I ordered itââ
He pulled the tray from my hands. âItâs not the way things are done.
